It is my belief that we are now at a stage after 25yrs of judo for people with disabilities, where we must now start to look at all aspects the work.

Special Olympics International are running National/European and World Games in judo (For people with a learning Disability only).

National  Governing Federations of Judo are running official events.  ( For all Disabilities)

The Paralympics are running major events in judo, (for Visually Impaired only).

The Disabilities

In paralympic and Special Olympics judo, the disabilities of the athletes is clearly written.

In the National Federations, we accept all disabilities, this is a good thing, but over the years, we have taken on many disabilities, some I would not really class has a disability, but that is just my opinion.

I believe if an athlete perhaps just as a reading or writing or behavioural difficulty, should they be put in the same judo pool groups has those perhaps with down syndrome or mental disability or even a physical disability.

Special Olympics states those athletes with ADD or Dyspraxia only, are not eligible to participate in Special Olympics.

What are your views on this ????????

Should we now look at our level system?

We have 5 judo levels from good to weak judoka.

I would like to see us perhaps have level 1 "A"  and Level"1 B", Then those athletes with a mild disability ( Perhaps ADD/Behavioural/Dyspraxia),can be put in A and athletes with other disabilities in level "B".

I believe if we do not change, we will be able to predict the outcome of winners at all our events.

I would appreciate your comments on our levelling system of athletes?

Please email; royjudo2@hotmail.co.uk

I would also like to see our level 1 athletes now being able to do sutemiwaza techniques, these athletes should and are capable of this.

It surely must be our aim on providing the sport of judo as near as possible to the IJF Rules.

Perhaps also for level 1 shimiwaza and Kansetsuwaza, I  am not sure of this but if we had an A+ B system shown on this page it could work.

If the EJU are thinking of running an official judo event, we should do our best to ensure our top athletes can perform nearly to the standard of mainstream and IJF rules.

Another option we have is to guide our level 1 A athletes through the mainstream system??
